Uganda president Yoweri Museveni has refused to approve a controversial bill that would have seen homosexuals jailed for life despite viewing gays as “sick” and “abnormal”. In a letter to parliament, the president suggested homosexuality was caused by a genetic flaw, or a need to make money.
Lesbians, he added, choose female partners because of “sexual starvation” and the failure to marry a man. “He does not approve of homosexuality but he believes that these people have a right to exist,” presidential spokesman Tamale Mirudi said, explaining why the bill had been rejected.
Museveni, a key regional ally of the US and the European Union, has already been under fire from key Western donors over alleged rampant corruption and had faced calls from diplomats and rights groups to block the legislation.
But the spokesman insisted the president was not backing down in the face of international condemnation.
“What the president has been saying is that we shall not persecute these homosexuals and lesbians. That is the point. That is the message. Maybe society can resent them but they cannot be persecuted because of their problem,” Mirudi said.
“It was not because of a lobby. Nobody has influenced the president. The president’s position has been the same for a long time, nothing has changed,” he added.
Museveni, who is a devout evangelical Christian, said the best way to stop people being gay was to improve the African nation’s economy and give young people jobs. Although he has refused to sign off on the legislation, the president left little doubt that his homophobic outlook remained intact.
The President was very right just like any Christian Could do. What the world should no is that in the book of Genesis 1:26, God proposed to make man in his own image,in verse 27 God full filled his vision and in his own image, he created male and female.The Gay or homosexuals are a creation of God.They where not born as Gays or Homosexuals, its just the Devil,Satan confusing these young girls and boys to do this just like he lied to Eve and tempted her to eat on the fruit in the garden of Eden.
Look at young people who masturbates,what causes that? and i’m sure almost every one has ever done it, THIS IS JUST A HABIT,A SICKNESS WHICH MUST STOP BY TALKING AND PREACHING TO THEM,NOT IMPRISONING OR KILLING.
Should the same thing be done to prostitutes? Please members of parliament if u don’t have issues to debate ,just give us a break and i request this message to reach all members of parliament and Pastors who also came up and supported them.
Pastors,Reverends, Bishops, Sheiks,Fathers, priests and all preachers of the word of God,this is the challenge before us,and its not the parliament or the President to start converting the Gays or homosexuals.Give him a break please.What is your roll in the community? To make matters worse some of these people practicing it are your children,really what answer will you give to God?
My suggestion is that like the whole world is handling Aids,its the same way we should handle this sickness in the mind of these people. It is a sickness we taking so lightly and condemning people practicing it,as it was before with Aids. Just wait a bit,remember we have children mostly in boarding school and its were some of these practices begins from.
Fellow country men and women stop condemning these people.Stop accusing the President because he refused to sign the bill,he is not the one who couched them to be homosexuals.Stop blaming any one.LET EVERYONE BE RESPONSIBLE FOR THIS.When you come across this victim, talk to him or her and i’m sure we shall have a changed society.
