Nakawa Chief Magistrates Court has today charged Mukono Municipality Member of Parliament Betty Nambooze Bakireke with incitement to of the public to murder government officials. On Wednesday, the Mukono Municipality legislator in a wheel chair did not enter the dock but the charges of incitement to commit an offence contrary to section 21(i) of the Penal Code Act were read to her by grade one magistrate Noah Ssajjabi.
“On or about the 9th day of June 2018 by uttering and postings in the media, you incited the public to attack and murder public figures however well- guarded since the government could not secure them,” Ssajjabi read. Nambooze however denied the charges. Her lawyer Erias Lukwago pleaded with the court to grant his client bail because of her sorry health condition.
Sajjabi released her on a five million shillings non- cash bond after presenting sureties who included Kalungu East MP Gonzaga Ssewungu and Rubaga North MP Moses Kasibante.
After the ruling, Nambooze said, “I did cry in Court…Am so sad because of what our institutions have become…Ugandans have no where to go…The Executive has become very vindictive and it’s using the army and police to subdue citizens who are demanding for the rights, it is so partisan,Parliament is a shadow of its former self and the judiciary has been rendered impotent. I cry for my country.”
Nambooze was on June 13 arrested by police over statements she made on her social media page in the wake of the brutal murder of Arua Municipality legislator, Col. Ibrahim Abiriga before being detained at Naggalama police station but was released when her health condition deteriorated.
She re-arrested the day next day and taken back to Naggalama. When her medical condition deteriorated further, she transferred to Kiruddu government hospital and later flown to India for further medical attention on her spine.
