Makerere Community Church leader, Pastor Ssempa Martin has no kind words for the late South African Archbishop, Desmond Tutu. The Nobel Peace Prize winner passed away over the weekend at the age of 90.
Tributes have been pouring in from near and afar for his humanitarian works. However one thing that will always dent his legacy in the African religious setting is his views on same sex relationships. Tutu a few years ago said that “I would refuse to go to a homophobic heaven. No, I would say sorry. I mean I would rather much go to the other place.” These are words that did not go unnoticed in African conservative setting where same-sex marriage is still very much a criminal act.
It is intolerable in many countries and Pastor Ssempa in his remarks labeled Tutu backslidden over these views. Ssempa added that probably Tutu is now in the place of his choice (hell).
“Sad: Backslidden and discredited #DesmondTutu dies before repenting for theological #Homosexualism. He is now safely in the “other place” of his choice!
Pride and Apostasy are unforgivable sins. It’s the sin that Jesus said could NOT be forgiven. ‘And so I tell you, every kind of sin and slander can be forgiven, but the blasphemy against the Spirit will not be forgiven.” Matt 12:31,” Ssempa said.
Many remember Tutu in the fight against apartheid in South Africa. They greatly applaud his contributions that former and the late South African President, Nelson Mandela mentioned.
Tutu in his activism during the apartheid struggles brought in mixed reactions. The pro-apartheid whites despised and considered him too radical. Meanwhile, Africans considered him too soft.
Tutu won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1984 after they nominated him in 1981, 83, and 84. The Nobel Prize selection committee had wanted to recognize a South African and thought Tutu would be a less controversial choice than Mandela or Mangosuthu Buthelezi.
