Kawooya who was captured on video being brutalized by security operatives on Thursday last week has been released from CMI custody

Yusuf Kawooya, the man who was brutally arrested by security operatives near Christ the King in Kampala last Thursday, has finally been released on police bond. This new development has been revealed by Nakawa Division Member of Parliament, Micheal Kabaziguruka that Kawooya has been released on police bond, however, no charges have been preferred against him.

Kawooya is expected to report back to the Special Investigations Division on October 31. This comes hardly a day when Kawooya’s family through his lawyers Caleb Alaka and Kenneth Paul Kakande filing a habeas corpus application at the High Court Civil Division.

A habeas corpus application is made in court seeking a person under detention to be brought before a judge or magistrate especially to secure that person’s release unless lawful grounds are shown to justify their continued incarceration.

Kawooya’s Brother-Sulaiman Kawooya in his affidavit stated that since Yusuf’s arrest they have not been allowed to access him, nor his Doctor yet he is in a sorry state having been brutally beaten, a result of which he is oozing blood through his private parts.

He had stated that Kawooya was either detained at CMI-Mbuya or at  SIU-Kireka, but that the Court should issue orders compelling the Chief of Defence Forces, Gen. David Muhoozi, the IGP Martin Okoth Ochola, the Commandant of SIU and CMI, to produce him in court whether dead or alive.
