19 people have been arrested by police in Kween District over allegations of supporting women and girls to be subjected to illegal circumcision or Female Genital Mutilation ( FGM ) in several sub-counties. Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) is globally recognized as violation of human rights of girls and women.
Even though it was banned in Uganda, it is still performed in some communities. In Uganda, some parts of Sebei sub-region districts such as Kapchorwa, Kween and Bukwo have the majority of women and girls who have already experienced FGM.
When the current District Police Commander, Mr Musinguzi Denis was contacted, he confirmed that 19 people have so far been arrested and they are still searching for the mutilators who are currently on the run.
Those who were arrested on Monday night during the operation have been put in custody at Kween Central Police Station,’’he said Ever since the government outlawed the practice, many of them have become unemployed and yet this was their source of income,’’he added.
The RDC of Kween District, Mr Balwaniregha Ephraim Denic said they have begun to sensitize the people on the dangers and disadvantages of practicing FGM.
