Meet UBC Journalist Peter Otai, Who Leaked Maj. Gen Matayo Kyaligonza’s Brutality Footage

Uganda’s Ambassador to Burundi, Maj. Gen. Matayo Kyaligonza and his bodyguards’ leaked video showing how they manhandled a traffic Policewoman in Seeta on Sunday continues for the second day as the main talk around town.

This was after she tried to stop them from offending traffic rules as they rode along Kampala-Jinja road.

You will agree with me that here is often one uncelebrated life behind such controversial social media leaked videos that deserve the biggest reward.

In most cases it’s the media, as one of its sole duties to create public awareness of happenings around the country.

On Sunday it was a brave Uganda Broadcasting Cooperation Sports Journalist, Peter Otai who gave up on his life and captured the entire incident on camera using his smart phone.

It would be a cheap act for you especially before getting to know what happened to him next after being snooped by these guilty arms.

Let alone trying to speak up for Sgt. Esther Namaganda (the Traffic Police Officer who was being manhandled), Otai little did he know his fateful moment had also approached.

According to Otai, he was snatched by the two bodyguards and presented before Maj. Gen. Kyaligonza’s who immediately paired his baby cheeks with loud slap that nearly threw him on the ground.

Since then, Otai has not hesitated to open up a case of assault against the Major General and his bodyguards at Seeta Police Station.

But who exactly is Peter Otai?

Born in September 1982 (now 36 years old), Otai is a seasoned sports journalist who hails from the Eastern region of Teso but was raised in the neighbourhoods of Bukoto and Ntinda, Nakawa Division, Kampala. He had his secondary school education at Premier High School Kisaasi, before joining Makerere University for his undergraduate studies.

He started his journalism career at UBC twelve years ago, and has kept with the national franchise and its brethren media platforms ever since.

Among other roles he has worked as presenter on UBC Radio, sports reporter and sports anchor on UBC TV, producer of several programmes on both UBC radio and UBC TV. He is a former manager of Magic FM, which is part of the Uganda Broadcasting Corporation (UBC) franchise. He has also been part of the commentating team for the Uganda Premier League (football) on Azam TV.

He is not married but reportedly has a fiancée. He is also said to be man who deeply loves his mother, always talking about her at work and among friends.
