By Website Writer; The National Drug Authority has finally authorized COVIDEX, a locally made herbal remedy as ‘supportive treatment’ for COVID-19.
This was confirmed by the government at the Media Center in Kampala on Tuesday.
It follows days of back-and-forth engagements between the regulator and its developer, Prof Patrick Ogwang.
Therefore, Covidex, a herbal drug now holds a license to be sold in pharmacies as a supporting treatment to COVID-19.
However, it is not a cure to COVID19.
Covidex was founded and developed by Prof. Patrick Engeu Ogwang, a lecturer at Mbarara University of Science and Technology.
Prior to his engagement with the government, Prof. Ogwang had noted that no clinical studies had been carried out on the drug to determine its efficacy.
Prof. Ogwang said that the drug had only undergone laboratory tests on animals to determine active compounds and safety.
“Only a few people have used it so far to relive their symptoms of COVID-19. More proof is needed to show it works against COVID-19. Clinic trials that prove as medicine or effective has not yet been done due to funding limitations,” said the statement signed by Prof. Ogwang.
However, there have been testimonies from the public about the effectiveness of the drug though it had been left to the government to confirm.
This comes in a time as Uganda battles the second deadly wave of COVID-19.
