By Website writer; Distribution of the highly anticipated COVID-19 relief fund promised by the government of Uganda to the lockdown vulnerable groups of people has finally kicked off.
The inauguration of the distribution exercise took place at the Office of the Prime Minister in Kampala led by Prime Minister, Rt. Hon. Robinah Nabbanja.
The first beneficiary was Godfrey Oloya a Boda Boda rider in Gulu whom Prime Minster Robinah Nabbanja called to confirm receipt of Shs. 102450.
According to government data presented on Thursday, July 8, 126, 552 individuals have so far been cleared nationwide to receive the relief package, with only six of these in Nakawa Division, Kampala.
The government agreed with telecom companies that no deduction will be done on any withdrawal fees from the COVID—19 relief token.
It was also agreed that people with debts on mobile money will be spared.
Only six people in Kampala City had been cleared, by Thursday, as the government formally launched the COVID-19 relief cash payment that aims to give UGX 100, 000 each, to over 500, 000 vulnerable people in cities and municipalities
Gender minister Betty Amongi, Wednesday, told journalists in Kampala that data of up to 479,627 (95.8 percent) payees was yet to be verified and uploaded on the government systems used in payment.
