By Website Writer; Ugandan Minister for Security, Maj Gen. Jim Muhwezi has downplayed reports involving him responsible for the increased cases of torture by security agencies in Uganda.
In a parliament session last week, Gen. Muhwezi denied basis entailing him accountable for any case of torture that he also condemns.
Gen. Muhwezi also says none of the reported cases of torture has been proved.
“No case (of torture) has been proven. So, there is no cause for alarm because we all don’t support it. There is no basis for saying that I should be held responsible for something that I don’t support, I have not done and, condone,” said Maj Gen. Jim Muhwezi.
However, Mariam Wangadya, the Parliamentary Human Rights Committee head has questioned Uganda Human Rights Commission’s presence in the rampantly existing cases of torture.
“In all the torturing of Ugandans going on, where is the Uganda Human Rights Commission? why is it silent on torture, what is its role even? is it still relevant?” Mariam Wangadya said.
Minister for Security, Maj Gen Jim Muhwezi also promised to reward Members of Parliament that didn’t sign the censure motion against him.
