By Website Writer; Today, Monday, March 7, 2022, the Katuna – Gatuna border point between Uganda and Rwanda has officially been opened fully to the public fully after 3years of closure.
This follows a Rwanda cabinet meeting headed by President Paul Kagame last week at Urugwiro village that concluded the reopening of all borders across the country.
However, it was conditioned that people must be subject to random Covid-19 testing by the Ministry of Health upon entry.
“Land borders shall reopen starting Monday March 7th but people must be subject to random Covid-19 testing by the Ministry of Health upon entry,” reads the cabinet meeting resolution statement from the Prime Minister’s office.
Rwanda suddenly closed its border with Uganda in 2019, accusing Uganda of abducting its citizens and supporting rebels seeking to topple Kagame. Uganda in turn accused Rwanda of spying as well as killing two men during an incursion into Ugandan territory in 2019, a claim that Kigali denied.
In January 2022, Uganda’s Land Forces Commander and first son Maj Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba jetted to Kigali-Rwanda to meet H.E Paul Kagame.
Their discussion entailed over Uganda-Rwanda’s faded relationship in the past few years but most importantly the border closure.
Fortunately, Muhoozi’s strides into Rwanda’s State House paid off heavily as President Kagame agreed to end the clash as he promised to reopen the Katuna – Gatuna border.
A few days after their meeting, cargo crossing from Uganda was permitted into Rwanda though passengers were not until a later date that has finally arrived.
Closure of Gatuna – Katuna crossing created financial hardships for Rwandan & Ugandan citizens doing business across the border.
