By Website Writer; Its close to another heated-up race for the Speaker of the 11th Parliament of Uganda replacing the deceased Rt Hon. Jacob Oulanyah.
The Cabinet on Monday resolved that the Speaker of Parliament election will be held on Friday, March 25, 2022.
This is in respect to the constitution of the republic of Uganda that directs no Parliament business when the Speaker of Parliament dies until an election that determines the successor.
The National Resistance Movement (NRM) Chairperson, H.E YK Museveni directed the government Chief Whip, Hon. Thomas Tayebwa, to inform all members of the NRM members to attend the special caucus meeting slated for Thursday.
This would see the right candidate fronted by the NRM to contest with other political parties in Parliament for the seat.
NRM Electoral Commission chairperson Dr. Tanga Odoi announced receiving of nominations from those interested in the seat with effect from Tuesday, March 22, 2022 8am at the party Electoral Commission offices.
Different NRM members of parliament and Ministers are flocking the party EC offices in Kampala to officially express their interests for the third biggest seat in the country.
According to Dr. Tanga Odoi, to contest for the above position, an aspiring Candidate must be an NRM member of the 11th Parliament.
Ministers expressing interest as NRM flag bearers don’t have to resign until CEC endorses them.
The following have expressed interest in the Speaker of Parliament position under the NRM ticket:
- Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Rt Hon. Annet Anita Among.
- Deputy Attorney General Jackson Kafuuzi Karugaba
- Tororo Woman MP, Hon. Sarah Opendi
- West Budama South MP, Hon. Jacob Oboth
- Dokolo South County MP, Hon. Felix Okot Ogong
- Arua City Central Division MP, Hon. Atima Jackson Lee Buti
- Lwemiyaga county MP, Hon. Theodore Ssekikubo
