During their Court appearance on Wednesday, the Kawempe North and Makindye West legislators fronted their bid for the Speakership despite being still held in jail.

They asked their lawyers to prepare their academic documents for submission to the Parliamentary Electoral Commission.

Ssewanyana and Ssegirinya will stand for Speaker and Deputy speaker positions respectively, should it fall vacant from the opposition side.

If endorsed by their belonging political party National Unity Platform (NUP), they will battle for the Speaker of Parliament place with the Rt. Hon. Annet Anita Among who has been fronted by the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM).

The two MPs, who have been on remand since September 20, 2021 were first accused of murder, attempted murder and aiding and abetting terrorism alongside several other suspects arrested in connection with last year’s spate of killings that left 26 people dead in Greater Masaka.
