By Website Writer; Kamuli District Women’s Constituency legislator, Hon. Rebecca Alitwala Kadaga has mourned her successor in the Speaker of Parliament seat, the Late Rt. Hon. Jacob L’Okori Oulanyah.
On May 21, 2021, on the National Resistance Movement (NRM) ticket Oulanyah beat Kadaga who had run as an independent, Hon. Ibrahim Ssemujju Nganda as an Forum for Democratic of Change (FDC) candidate, to win the Speaker of the 11th Parliament position.
Hon. Kadaga who currently serves as the First Deputy Prime Minister of Uganda’s relationship with the Late Hon. Oulanyah was thought to be bitter especially after her disagreeing with the NRM Central Executive Committee’s decision of endorsing Oulanyah for the Speaker of Parliament elections, dropping her name.
However, during the Special Plenary Parliamentary sitting on Tuesday in honor of the Late Speaker, Hon. Kadaga expressed her grief towards Oulanyah’s death.
Kadaga who also serves as the Minister for East African Community Affairs fore-apologized for not attending the Late Speaker’s next funeral programs because of other commitments her has.
She however delivered her farewell message to her friend, colleague and partner the Late Hon. Oulanyah.
“I will not be able to attend the other functions because of other obligations, but I want to say farewell to my friend, colleague and partner,” Hon. Rebecca Alitwala Kadaga told Parliament.
Hon. Kadaga also asked government to honor the deceased Speaker by implementing the Copyright and Neighborhood Rights Act, which motion he moved for private members bill in in 2006 during his time in office.
“This morning, I took opportunity to pay tribute to Late Rt Hon Oulanyah at the special sitting of parliament, called on the Govt to honour him by implementing the Copyright and Neighbourhood Rights Act , for which he moved a motion for private members bill in in 2006,” Hon. Kadaga added.
The Late Oulanyah will receive a State Burial on Friday, April 8, 2022 in Omoro district after two weeks since he breathed his last.
