Museveni speaks about the rising commodity prices

By Website Writer; President of the Republic of Uganda, H.E YK Museveni has opened up on the thrillingly increasing prices of daily-life commodities in the country.

While addressing the National Resistance Movement (NRM) Parliamentary Caucus at Kololo Ceremonial Grounds on Tuesday, April 26, 2022, clearly lamented on the issue of high prices for commodities that is a viral discussion around the country of late.

President Museveni said that the lethal escalating prices of commodities was sparked by Covid-19 pandemic that greatly affected the service industry around the world.

Commodities such as soap is a necessity for industries like Tourism, Hotel, factories, and since some of these collapsed during the pandemic, the soap raw material producers were also induced to bankruptcy and closure of business.

At the moment, most economies have recovering and service industries regaining stability but the soap raw material suppliers are still scarce hence low supply spined with high demand of the commodities.

The items that have gone most, have been first of all materials for making soap, this is palm oil or tallow. When we had Corona Virus, the service industry in the world collapsed e.g Tourism, Hotels, Air Transport, everything collapsed. Need soap for use in their services, but when they collapse, even the soap consumption goes down. And when it goes down, the producers of the raw materials used to make soap also turn bankrupt and jobless,” President Museveni said.

So when Corona has now reduced, the economy has opened, the demand is high, but the suppliers are very few,” he added.

President Museveni in a deprived tone also blamed Ugandans for failure to take on the National Resistance Movement (NRM) advise and platforms to build their own capacities.

He also decried leaders for always politicizing every formulation by the government towards improving livelihoods, the latest case is the Buvuma land that he (Museveni) gave to Palm oil farmers to increase the production of tallow, a soap making raw material.

But ofcourse, this is a fault of the structure of the society in Uganda. The NRM has always begged Ugandans to build their own capacity. That is why we started the palm oil project in Kalangala in order to produce tallow for making soap. It was expanding after me giving the farmers more land in Buvuma but it was contested by some government officials,” Museveni lamented.
