We can’t be enemies of somebody’s enemy – President Museveni

By Website Writer; Uganda and Russia have strengthened their ties after Foreign Affairs Minister, H.E Sergey Lavrov two-day visit to Uganda.

H.E Sergey Lavrov received a warm welcome to the ‘Pearl of Africa’ on Tuesday, July 26, 2022 by his counterpart in Uganda Hon. Gen. Jeje Odongo.

Lavrov and his delegation later headed to State House – Entebbe where he met with H.E YK Museveni as they discussed bilateral issues.

A joint press conference was also addressed where President Museveni affirmed a neat and longtime relationship between Uganda and Russia.

Museveni commended the over 100years of support from Russia to the anti-colonial African movements.

The people of Uganda and myself welcome H.E Sergey Lavrov, Russia’s Foreign Affairs Minister. Russia has been supporting the anti-colonial African movement for the last 100 years and I commend their long-standing relationship with Uganda,” H.E YK Museveni stated.

He faulted the recent idea raised by some union bodies of tasking all countries to sanction Russia after its Ukraine invasion.

President Museveni said that African liberation movement has got a clear understanding of the on-going socio-economic and political wars worldwide, hence firm with its stand.

Whenever issues come up and some people want us to take positions against Russia we say; but these people have been with us for the last 100 years. We have got our clear position as part of the African liberation movement. We know who is who and who’s doing what and why, and we know where we stand,” President Museveni added.

He also vowed Uganda to never to aid people to fight their enemies but instead make its own enemies.

We don’t believe in being enemies of somebody’s enemy. No! We want to make our own enemies not fight other people’s enemies. This is our doctrine. How can we automatically be against those who have been with us for the last 100 years? We have forgiven those who did bad things to us and we are working with them, how about those who have never harmed us?

This comes hot on the heels where sanctions to continue to hit Vladimir Vladimirovich Putin’s government.
