Ugandan digital national identity cards due in 2023 – Government

The government of Uganda is planning to upgrade the current analogue national identity cards with smart digital made in 2023, Minister of Internal Affairs Maj Gen. Kahinda Otafiire confirmed on Tuesday, August 9, 2022.

The modified national identity cards will come with added features and will be digital costing the government over Ugx.600Billion.

Maj Gen. Kahinda Otafiire said the money will be used to purchase high-tech machines that will make improved national IDs with a chip that can identify people’s eyes and recognize their DNA.

He also asserted that government will introduce the issuance of express National IDS which will cost only Shs.50,000 although general issuance remains free of charge.
