One of the heroes of the 1986 Luweero bush war that brought the current NRM government to power, Gen Elly Tumwine has died at the age of 68. Tumwine who had just retired from the army in July 2022, died from Aga Khan Hospital in Nairobi, Kenya, where he was airlifted weeks ago as he battled cancer -related complications.
Rumors about his death first surfaced last week though were later trashed by his family and via his social media platforms.
“On behalf of the family of Gen Tumwine, we hereby dispel rumours circulating on social media in regard to his health and well-being. Thank you for the love and prayers,” read a post on Gen. Elly Tumwine’s Twitter.
Prior his transfer to Aga Khan Hospital in Nairobi, Gen Tumwine was first admitted at Nakasero hospital after he had collapsed at a certain function.
Close sources indicate that the deceased looked frail and was wheeled through the airport to take the flight.
The Late Tumwine, a military officer, professional artist, and educator also served as a member of the Ugandan Parliament, representing the UPDF.
