The ‘Singing General’ to be laid to rest today

Tumwine lost the battle to lung cancer on Thursday, August 25, 2022, at Aga Khan Hospital in Kenya’s capital Nairobi.

According to his medical team, the RO/00023 Gen. Elly Tumwine’s dire times on earth sparked in July 2022 with persisted health complications arising from Lung Cancer.

The deceased’s remains had a heroic entrance inside Kololo ceremonial grounds on Monday for the State mourning led by H.E YK Museveni. This was the second time roads to Kololo grounds were closed for his sake.

The first-time roads in Kololo were closed for Elly Tumwine was 1986. He was commander of the National Resistance Army, which had just taken power after a five-year guerrilla war.

During the mourning ceremony, President Museveni eulogized the ‘Singing General’ as a resilient man, with admirable courage and a spirit of sacrifice.

He also said that God used now the Late General to kick start the bush war that brought Museveni and the current government to power.

Gen. Elly Tumwine’s body arrived aboard a UPDF helicopter in Rwemikoma P/S playground, Kazo District in the evening hours of Monday, August 29, 2022.

He is the longest-serving MP in Parliament since 1986 until last year.

Friends, family and different government officials continue to lay wreaths to the body of the Gen Elly Tumwine as burial closes in.
