Speaker Among, PM Nabbanja lock horns over Nyege Nyege festival

By Website Writer; The celebrations for government clearing the Nyege Nyege festival to be hosted this year could be cut short.

This after government bodies; Parliament and Office of the Prime Minister clashing on its fate of happening.

Earlier this week, Parliament directing Ministries of Tourism and Ethics and Integrity to ban the 8-year-old celebration from happening as members cited immorality promotion in the festival.

This created mixed feelings from both government officials and the public, hence intervention by the Office of the Prime Minister.

The Prime Minister Rt. Hon. Robinah Nabbanja chaired a meeting with different stakeholders on Wednesday, September 7, 2022, to determine the fate of the controversial annual Nyege Nyege festival.

It was then that the Prime Minister threw party animals and the festival organizers into celebrations as she okayed it to take place though under guidelines stipulated by the Ministry of Ethics and Integrity that would see the Ugandan morals, culture, norms and heritages protected.

However, the jubilations were MPs expressed their dissatisfaction with the decision by the Prime Minister to give Nyege Nyege festival a go ahead.

Speaker Rt. Hon. Anita Among said that she will not withdraw her earlier statement about the event.

Among also noted that the decision about the event was only to come up after a joint meeting of all arms of government not one.

Whatever is happening must be put to halt and until tomorrow when we agree, we should be able to speak as a country…I’m not about to withdraw and I will not withdraw,” said Rt. Hon. Anitah Among.

Unfortunately, even after the meeting today between the Speaker and the executive, Speaker Among says the position of Parliament won’t change.

Whatever happens, has been left in the hands of the executive,” Rt. Hon. Among said.

Former State Minister of Mineral Development of Uganda and Tororo Woman Member of Parliament, Hon. Sarah Opendi said the country is at the risk of being plunged into a monkey pox pandemic, should Nyege Nyege festival go on because of the big number of tourists coming into the country to attend.

She’s questioned the country’s capacity to test for monkey pox.
