By Website Writer; H.E YK Museveni has directed Kampala City market ownership to be given to the poor.
In a meeting on Tuesday, November 1, 2022 with the Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) and market representatives, Museveni questioned why the markets are being controlled by the rich instead of the common man (Omuntu wawansi).
“In a meeting with a section of KCCA leaders and Market representatives, I opined that markets should be owned and managed by the muntu wawansi (common man), why are the rich controlling these markets?” Museveni’s statement on Twitter reads.
President recalls a disastrous experience with the former Kampala leaders who in the past rendered market ownership to the rich, instead ended up exploiting the poor with overwhelming charges.
He said that the markets should be exclusively owned and run by the poor people as the main beneficiaries, making a living for their families.
“The common people should be the beneficiaries, let the rich not exploit our poor people in these markets by charging high/ unnecessary fees. These mistakes came from past Kampala leaders, who got obutale bwa’abanaku (poor people’s markets) and gave them to the rich,” he adds.
“This should stop immediately. These small markets in Kampala are not a business for the rich, let the rich go elsewhere and leave these people trying to make a living for their families to prosper peacefully.”
President Museveni also related that KCCA should consider the poor first in its decisions especially the street vendors being chased off the streets.
“I ask our leaders in KCCA and all stakeholders elsewhere to prioritize our poor people while making some of these decisions. For instance, the people you have been chasing off roads have been saying they have nowhere to go, so if you do not plan for them where will they go?”
“We need to apply some logic to these things. Do these poor people have leaders in this city? Lwaki temubalumilirwa (Why aren’t they being helped)?”
