By Website Writer; It’s a heated-up debate in the Parliament of Uganda as legislatures seek to regulate alcohol consumption in the country.
According to Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Anita Annet Among, men who consume alcohol are known for defaulting their family and bed duties.
“It is a fact that when people drink, they abandon their families. It is also a fact that when you men drink, you even fail to perform,” Speaker Anita Annet Among.
“A responsible person cannot start drinking in the morning. Growing up, I saw people go to the bar in the afternoon,” Tororo District Woman MP Hon. Sarah Opendi lamented while appearing on NBS TV’s ‘Morning Breeze,” show on Thursday.
“Today, when you move to the countryside, alcohol has contributed to poverty, domestic violence, some street children etc,” she added.
According to Dr. David Kalema, a specialist in treating & managing conditions of Ugandans whose body parts have been damaged by alcohol and mental repercussions of Alcohol in Hope and beyond, an average Ugandan loses 5 years of productivity in life due to Alcohol misuse.
A report from the Uganda Women’s Network points out that a total number of 10,930 Ugandans participated in the poll under its poll ‘Serious Citizens’ campaign and 28%, accounting for the highest number of the respondents identified stress as a result of family matters as the main catalyst of alcohol abuse in Uganda.
Parliament on Tuesday, November 8, 2022, allowed Hon. Sarah Opendi to introduce a private member’s Bill that seeks to regulate the manufacture, importation, sale and consumption of alcohol in the country.
The big question remains that should alcohol consumption be regulated in Uganda?
