Singer King Saha is proposing for the new federation of musicians to be dismantled and rebuilt from the ground up.
The Kingslove singer, real names Mansur Ssemanda, thinks the Uganda National Musicians Association (UNMF) is poorly founded while its leadership lacks mandate, because it was elected by a handful of musicians.
“I think we should all go back to the drawing board,” Saha said in an interview recently.
“We need to combine forces and call everyone, and then do a general election where everyone votes; so that by the time you say you represent a person, that person really did vote for you.”
The Eddy Kenzo led UNMF, despite claiming to represent musicians associations from around the country, has been not been very forthcoming about the size of this membership.
And while some members of the biggest association (UMA) have joined the federation on an individual basis, its President Cindy Sanyu and other members are still reluctant.
Saha in the interview, said UNMF needs to go back down and convince all the musicians associations to get on board.
“There are so many unsolved issues which these associations are still dealing with. Like at UMA, some things haven’t been sorted yet and if we aren’t there yet, it is hard to imagine that it will be any better in the federation at the top,” he said.
“We need to first combine all the associations from across the country, then we can federate.”
Meanwhile, Saha revealed that he is currently organizing a peaceful protest where artists will march Parliament to demand that Government expedites the passing of the copyright law.
He however, wouldn’t give any more information about the planned protest.
