Musician Ronald Mayinja has come out to defend himself on why he attended and sang at a ‘tugikutteko’ rally in Kiboga district on Sunday yet he has for a long time been on the ‘togikwatako’ side and composed songs bashing Museveni’s government.
Mayinja, who was very hard to find kept dodging some of our questions. However, this is what we managed to squeeze out of him:
Reporter: You surprised us when you performed at an NRM function and shook hands with president Museveni yet you have always spoken ill against his government in your songs.
Mayanja: I never knew that I was going to sing at an NRM function. I went to Kiboga at the invitation of Ruth Nankabirwa thinking that I was going to perform at a small function as her friend. I never knew that it was an NRM/gikwateko party. I didn’t also know that Museveni would be there.
Reporter: So, you want to tell us that you don’t monitor what goes on in the country and when you reached Kiboga you never sensed anything on seeing SFC soldiers heavily deployed. By the way, when you were called out to sing, why didn’t you refuse?
Mayinja: I did (notice the heavy deployment), but I still didn’t think that the president was going to attend the same function where I was going to perform.
Reporter: But we have information that it was Balaam who called you not Nankabirwa.
Mayinja: Uuuuuuuumum both called me.
Reporter: Didn’t Balaam tell you that he was booking you for an NRM function with the president as the chief guest.
Mayinja: Let’s put that aside as per now, I have to inquire from my public relations team what to reply.
Reporter: You have been spotted at opposition rallies spreading opposition propaganda, are you now joining NRM, because that is what some opposition leaders like Nambooze are claiming.
Mayinja: That’s a pity, I can’t join NRM though I still chase a living through NRM party. I can’t chase money once I’m called to perform at their event because I earn a living from music, that’s my job.
