Upon his return, Eddy Kenzo has handed over the International awards he won to the Uganda Museum for easy public access. The Uganda Tourism Board has stated 5th April as the Uganda Artistes Day to be commemorated annually.
Arguably the most awarded Ugandan artiste, Eddy Kenzo a.k.a Idrisa Musuuza, has returned from Europe where he has been on duty covering his International media tour and performing in different countries including Belgium and around the United Kingdom.
Before leaving, Eddy Kenzo won the Best African Star award at the Nickelodeon Kids’ Choice Awards, and the Best African Entertainer award at the International Reggae and World Music Awards. These two accolades were added to his other prized awards including the famous BET Viewer’s Choice Best New International Artiste award that he won in 2016, and many others.
The Big Talent CEO was poised to return yesterday but he unfortunately missed his flight, disappointing fans who had organised to pick him from Entebbe International Airport in mammoth crowds. On his return however, the ‘Jubilation’ singer headed straight to the Uganda Museum where a presser had been organized to congratulate him upon his success in foreign lands.
Eddy Kenzo handed over his most prestigious awards to the Uganda Museum under the control of the Uganda Tourism Board for easier access by the public, and to also celebrate Ugandan art and music as a nation. The act is also aimed at encouraging the youth to work hard and achieve greater success in their endeavors. During his speech, Eddy Kenzo had this to say;
Thank you all my fans for supporting me,this success is for us all. I kindly ask the media to spread the news of my success across the world so that everybody can be inspired. The Ugandan government needs to regard the music industry as a powerful industry in this nation. It (government) has not cared enough about our industry, we fight really hard for our success without much of the government’s support. I won the Nickelodeon award because of music being a universal language, that is the power of music.
Eddy Kenzo also noted strongly about how artistes from other countries are fully backed by their respective governments and that makes them even hard to compete against. He noted;
Look at Diamond Platnumz in Tanzania, whenever he wins any international award, it is received by the President. Even last week when he did not win the award that I ended up winning (the Nickelodeon award), he was congratulated by the President. We need that too. This is not a blame game, I am not blaming the government but I know it is what Uganda needs. The government needs to make a special budget for the music industry, that is the only way we shall progress.
Personally I have suffered to achieve all this success, but I want things to be a bit easier for the coming generation. The Nickelodeon award is an international award and boasts a wider reach of people, but a Ugandan won and it is in our country. That means a lot, and the Ugandan government needs to support us. I do not want all this success to end with me, the generations to come can even do more but only if they are supported. May the Almighty show us the way, For God And My Country, thank you very much.
Eddy Kenzo then handed over his awards to Stephen Asiimwe, the CEO Uganda Tourism Board to present them to the Uganda Museum. Asiimwe applauded Kenzo’s goo gesture and declared 5th April a date on which the Ugandan music industry will be celebrated annually.
