Why Court Released Bizonto Comedy Group

By Wycliff G; Prominent comedy group, Bizonto were yesterday, Tuesday 28th July unchained from Police custody.

The group consisting of Ssabakaki Simon Peter alias Akozonto akato, Ssewanja Julius alias Ssabazonto, Mbabali Merceli alias Giant zonto and Gold Kimatono as Jjaja zonto, had spent four days in the cells since their arrest last week.

In a brief press conference held on Tuesday evening, Bizonto’s legal team from the Network of Public Interest Lawyers (NPIL) led by Counsel Eria Nawanuwe, told the media their release matched the court order from Chief Magistrates at Buganda Road Court after the Criminal Investigations Department failed to secure their accusations’ file to court earlier on Monday.

Today we are glad and happy that finally we have got a Court release order from the Chief Magistrates at Buganda Road Court, Her Worship, Stella Maris Odongo ordering the Police to release five people, Gerald Kiweewa, Ssabakaki Simon Peter alias Akozonto akato, Ssewanja Julius alias Ssabazonto, Mbabali Merceli alias Giant zonto and Gold Kimatono as Jjaja zonto to be released immediately from Police custody,” Mr. Nawanuwe told the press.

This follows a game where Police was engaging and not being truthful where the accused’s court file was because yesterday, they informed us that their file was at the DPP’s chambers but we cross checked and it was not true. So today we came with a court order saying that let the Police release the five,” Eria said.

Bizonto were arrested after the Police raided Radio Simba headquarters in Bukoto on Friday Morning.

The arrest was on allegations of promoting sectarianism in some of their published digital comedy skits.

They were taken to Kira road Police station before being shifted to the CID headquarters in Kibuli.
