After the constant arrest of some of the NUP supporters by the government including eddy mutwe, Dan magic, and Nubian lee who were arrested in Kalangala and others arrested in areas such as bududa in January, and busia in May among other places, The Democratic Party has called for the immediate release of the political prisoners.
While addressing the media at the party headquarters in Kampala, the DP spokesperson Mr. Okoler Opio Lo Amanu said its high-time president Museveni releases NUP supporters.
“This is very absurd and we condemn the government arresting innocent Ugandans because of their political beliefs.”
Opio says arresting citizens with different political affiliations will not let the government thrive
“We condemn such acts and demand that the government releases all those that have been placed in their custody on political grounds.”
Speaking about the manner in which Eddy mutwe and others were tried, Mr Opio says it is wrong to try civilians in Military courts and on top of that they didn’t appear on Monday in the Makindye court and no justification was given.
He went on and said that the people who helped Mr. Museveni into power by fighting for him were “sold with lies”
“if I had an opportunity to talk to them (veteran fighters) once more I would definitely tell them that they were sold a big lie and because of the same, we are entering into another episode fully packed with lies characterized with utmost levels of corruption, and deception”.
Commenting on the swearing-in ceremony that will take place tomorrow Mr. Opio said that it is important for Government to act as an example by calling a small number of delegates as stated in the SOPs during his last address to the public of not more than 200 persons meeting yet he is the same person going against the guidelines by inviting more than 400 guests.
“Let the concerts be open to musicians too to carry out shows and earn some money since the president has set a standard,” he said while airing his concern for the musicians who were not allowed to work during the covid pandemic until further recommendation by the government.
