Panic as Rebbecca Kadaga re-seeks Speakership seat as an independent candidate

By Website Writer; It’s a few minutes away for the Speaker and Deputy Speaker of the 11th Parliament of Uganda to be elected at Kololo Independence Grounds.

Unlike the former polls, the race heated up from day one when the campaigns commenced as an incumbent speaker, Rebecca Alitwala Kadaga takes on his former deputy, Jacob Oulanyah.

On Sunday, May 23, 2021, the National Resistance Movement (NRM) top organ of the Central Executive Committee (CEC) endorsed Hon. Jacob Oulanyah the party flag bearer in the polls, dumping Hon. Rebecca Alitwala Kadaga.

A few hours later, Hon. Rebecca Alitwala Kadaga proved unbothered by her party’s decision as she announced herself as an independent candidate in the race.

Fellow Ugandans, I have come to inform the people of Uganda that my party has opted not to give me the party flag for Speaker of Parliament. I have therefore decided to run as an independent,” Rebecca Alitwala Kadaga said.

Today, I was not given an opportunity to present myself to the electorate. The reason I am being pushed out is that I continue to speak for ordinary people,” Kadaga added.

H.E YK Tibuhabura Museveni has already arrived at Kololo Independence Grounds to administer the oath of the new speaker as per the Constitution.

Chief Justice Alfonse Owiny-Dollo is also already to preside over the Speaker and Deputy Speaker poll.
