Kenya Elections 2022: Ruto takes lead in tight race

By Website Writer; Results so far from the 2022 Kenyan Presidential Elections reveals candidates; Raila Odinga and William Ruto are in a neck-to-neck battle.

At the news time, Deputy President of Kenya William Ruto under his United Democratic Alliance party and Prime Minister Raila the ODM candidate under the Azimio La Umoja Coalition had garnered 1,383,880 Votes (51.01%) and 1,311,451 Votes (48.34%) respectively.

Other candidates; George Wajackoyah 11,639 Votes (0.43%) and 5,998 Votes (0.22%).

According to Kenya’s electoral body, Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) the results come from 2,712,968 total counted votes from the cast.

So far, 9,097 of 46,229 Polling stations have reported.

The winner of presidential elections needs 50% + 1 of the valid votes cast and at least 25% votes in more than 24 counties.

Raila Odinga enjoyed the lead in Nairobi County as polling stations continue to send in data.

On Tuesday, August 9, 2022, Kenyans braved the chilly weather to cast their ballots for the President, Governor, Senator, MNA, Woman Representative and MCA positions.

Raila Odinga’s running mate Martha Karua could be Kenya’s first female deputy president since independence, if current results from the polls are something to go by overturning. The position has been a preserve for men.

Kenya’s President Uhuru Kenyatta, who has served two terms and cannot run again, threw his weight behind Raila Odinga, giving him access to the ruling Jubilee party’s powerful election machinery.

Candidates Ruto and Raila also showed up earlier than most of the voters on the polls day to cast their ballots as they rallied Kenyans to exercise their right of voting leaders at different levels in government.
