By Website Writer; Reports on Sunday night indicated that the former Security Minister, Gen Elly Tumwine, 68, was fighting for his life at the Aga Khan Hospital in Nairobi, Kenya,
Gen Elly Tumwine was transferred from Nakasero to Aga Khan Hospital, Nairobi – Kenya last week Tuesday, August 9, 2022, after his condition had deteriorated according to a family source.
Sources familiar with the evacuation said the four-star general, a historical member of the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) High Command, looked frail and was wheeled through the airport to take the flight.
His daughter, Cynthia Tumwine on Saturday via Twitter, she dismissed rumours that her father had passed on.
In another tweet at 7:29pm yesterday, Ms Cynthia, without commenting on the condition of her father, wrote that “adversity will teach you so much about human nature”.
“That said, I wouldn’t wish the last 24 hours on anyone. Travel time needs to undo social media because it’s currently in the pits. God is faithful, regardless, th[r]ough [inserted love emoji]. We give him praise,” she noted cryptically.
The health of Gen Tumwine, who hails from Mbarara District, has been a subject of public speculation for a while, including when he was still a cabinet minister.
Relatives and associates reported that weeks ago, he collapsed at the marriage ceremony of a prominent female journalist, and was later booked at Nakasero Hospital in Kampala.
His condition worsened, prompting a relocation to Nairobi on Tuesday for more specialized medical care.
The ailment hasn’t been publicly disclosed, but the general in the past received treatment at the Uganda Cancer Institute in Mulago Hospital.
Earlier, an unknown person tweeted on Gen Tumwine’s official handle that “on behalf of the family of Gen Tumwine, we hereby dispel rumours circulating on social media in regards to his health and well-being. Thank you for the love and prayers.”
The UPDF spokesperson, Brig Felix Kualigye, yesterday said he could not discuss the life and health of a general, saying it would contravene policy.
“Do you expect that a UPDF general can die and we keep quiet?” he asked to dispel the death rumours.
The four-star general last year was forced to declare himself alive after unknown people on social media circulated messages announcing him dead.
